What is Carne Asada?
Carne asada is grilled and sliced beef, usually skirt steak, flap steak, or flank steak though chuck steak, can also be used. It is usually marinated then grilled or seared to impart a charred flavor. Carne asada can be served on its own or as an ingredient in other dishes, according to Wikipedia.
What type of steak should I use for these Carne Asada Tacos?
Traditionally, Carne Asada is made with skirt steak or flank steak.
Personally, I like to use the small sirloin tender steak fillets or flank steak in this recipe. Walmart sells the small sirloin steak fillets for a reasonable price. These small sirloin steaks are easy to cut, flavorful and tender with the marinade! You could use skirt steak which has a higher fat content and that would vary in point values.
What ingredients do I need to make these Carne Asada Street Tacos?
- Flank steak or lean sirloin tender steak or skirt steak-cut into bite size chunks of slices. I like use lean sirloin steaks.
- Simply light orange juice– this tenderizes the steak
- Limes– juiced
- Onion Powder
- Garlic-minced
- Oregano
- Cumin
- Salt
- Mission white corn tortillas or zero net carb tortillas– the overall point value is the same regardless of which one you use.
Optional Toppings:
- White onion, chopped
- Cilantro, finely chopped
- Cherry tomatoes, chopped
- Guacamole
- Cheese
What tortillas do you recommend using for these Carne Asada Tacos?
I like to use the Mission white corn tortillas or the zero net carb tortillas. You can find these at most grocery stores. You can find these on Amazon online, as well.
How do I make these Carne Asada Street Tacos?
Season steak with onion powder and kosher salt.
Thinly slice or cut steak against the grain into thin slices or bite sized chunks.
Place steak pieces into a large ziplock bag.
In a small bowl combine light orange juice, lime juice, garlic, oregano, and cumin.
Whisk until well combined.
Pour the marinade into the bag with the steak slices or chunks.
Seal tightly removing any excess air. Store in the refrigerator and marinate for at least 2 hours or as long as overnight. The longer you can marinate the meat, the more tender it will be.
When you are ready to grill the meat, drain the steak pieces from the marinade and discard any remaining marinade.
Generously spray a cast iron grill pan with cooking spray. Place steak chunks into a cast iron grill pan grill and cook over medium-high heat.
The cook time will depend on the thickness of the steak. Cook until the internal temperature reads 140-145° Fahrenheit or 130° Fahrenheit for medium-rare.
Spray both sides of the tortillas with cooking spray. Cook tortillas in a skillet on both sides.
Fill cooked tortillas with chopped steak.
Add chopped onions, cheese, tomatoes, cilantro and guacamole, if desired.
Enjoy!
