This Lightened Up Tarter Sauce is creamy, flavorful, and on your favorite seafood dish, fish sticks, fish sandwiches, crab cakes, tuna cakes, veggies and/or pita bread.

What is the origin of Tarter Sauce?

Tartar sauce originated in France as sauce tartare, named after the Tatars, who settled in the Ukraine and parts of Russia. The French, in producing this mayonnaise or aioli-based sauce, may have based the “tartar” moniker upon their own varied spelling of the Tatar name, which was “Tartare”

It is spelled as ‘tartare sauce’ in some parts of Europe, South Africa, and Australia. Tartar sauce is mainly made from mayonnaise with pickles, capers, herbs, and in some recipes, hard-boiled eggs or lemon juice.

What ingredients do I need to make this Lightened Up Tarter Sauce?

  • Light Mayonnaise/Non Fat Plain Greek Yogurt– This tarter sauce is lightened up using light mayo. However, it can made when lighter by using 1/4 cup Light mayo + 1/4 cup non fat Greek yogurt. The light mayo and seasonings masks the taste of the Greek yogurt making it a great add in and provides a little bit of protein to the sauce. I prefer making this particular recipe with light Kraft mayo-which gives this lightened up recipe a very similar taste and texture to a creamy and flavorful restaurant worthy tarter sauce.
  • Dill pickle relish or dill pickles, finely chopped – is perfect to flavor for tarter sauce-and gives the sauce a nice tanginess and texture.
  • Fresh or dried dill is  If you don’t have dill, parsley can be used.
  • Capers-drained and finely chopped-these are optional but they add more flavor and pairs well with the lemon and herbs.
  • Lemon juice
