Black Bean Burgers

These Black Bean Burgers are simple to make and packed with black beans, onions, garlic, and perfectly spiced with a few other seasonings! These make for the perfect meatless burger! Flavorful and delicious!

Servings: Makes 6 pattie

What ingredients do I need to make these black bean burgers?

  • Canned black beans– drained and rinsed. Be sure to let the beans dry out to ensure the excessive moisture is removed after rinsing them. This will create a better texture so the burgers aren’t mushy.
  • Onion-you can use yellow or red onion. Be sure to mince the onion if you aren’t using a food processor.
  • Garlic- peeled and minced
  • Hot sauce or sugar free BBQ sauce – you can use sriracha, Franks original hot sauce, or for a milder flavor you can use a sugar free BBQ sauce or ketchup
  • Light mayo or non fat Greek yogurt-adds flavor and a bit of creaminess
  • Worcestershire sauce– for flavor
  • Cumin– adds flavor
  • Paprika-adds flavor
  • Egg-is used as a binding agent to keep the patty together
  • Plain breadcrumbs– adds texture and keeps the mixture together
  • Salt and pepper-for taste

Do I need a food processor to make these?

If you don’t have a food processor you can mash the mixture up with a fork- just be sure to mince the onion and garlic well. I use my Ninja Food Processor. I absolutely love it. You can find it on Amazon HERE

Are these burgers mushy?

Nope! The key to making these burgers NOT mushy is making sure the black beans are dried out.  I like to pat the rinsed beans with a dry clean paper towel to ensure the excessive moisture is removed.  This will create a better texture so the burgers aren’t mushy.

Do these black bean burgers freeze well?

Yes, they do. Be sure to freeze them after cooking and without condiments. To freeze the leftover patties, place each patty between a piece of parchment paper and store in an air tight container for up to two months in the freezer.

What low point hamburger bun do you recommend?

Walmart carries Great Value hamburger buns that are 110 calories or 3 personalpoints, Healthy Life hamburger buns are 80 calories or 2 Personalpoints, you can click HERE to find the nearest location that sells these, or Smart Baking Company has gluten-free 1 point buns. How do I make these black beans burgers?

In a food processor pulse onion & garlic, hot sauce or sugar free bbq sauce, light mayo, Worchestershire sauce, paprika, and cumin until well combined.

Add beans and pulse or mash with a fork until well combined and the mixture looks pasty with little chunks.

Transfer the bean mixture into a bowl and add salt, pepper, and beaten egg. Stir to combine.

Add bread crumbs and continue mixing until mixture is well blended.

Using your hands, form the black bean mixture into six patties. (about 1/3 cup per patty)

Spray a skillet with non-stick cooking spray.

Cook the patties on low to medium heat for 7-8 minutes on each side or until patties are crisp on the outside and slightly firm to the touch.

These black bean burgers can be cooked in the air fryer, by cooking at 370 degrees for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway.

Add your favorite burger toppings; light mayo, lettuce, tomato, and or cheese.

 Enjoy!

I have made these twice now and I am in looooove with them. These are so good! I am a total meat eater, but I truly love a good veggie burger, The homemade type veggie burgers are always better than the store bought ones, namely morning star. Those are ok in a pinch, but when I saw your recipe and it was only 1 point per burger, I knew I had to try it. Thank God I did! I will be making these forever as a freezer lunch time staple. Even my 15 year old who normally bemoans veggie burgers for dinner asked for seconds. For anyone wondering, I made these in the oven rather than in a pan. I have very little patience ha. I just sprayed a cookie sheet with pan spray, formed the patties, cooked at I believe 370 for about 8-10 minutes, flipped, and then cooked for another 5 or so minutes. You can kind of tell when they are done so just watch them.

Hi Michele

Yes, they can be pre-made and frozen. I recommend placing parchment paper in-between each patty and storing in an air tight container-they can be a bit delicate. Thank you!

Hi Erin,

Yes, they are a bit delicate so I would recommend putting them in the fridge or freeze for a bit prior to grilling them just so they don’t fall apart when they hit the grill.

Thank you
