What is Alice Springs Chicken?
Alice Springs Chicken is a chicken dish from Outback Steakhouse. It’s basically; grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, crisp bacon, melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar and honey mustard sauce.
What ingredients do I need to make this Lightened Up Copycat Outback Steakhouse Alice Springs Chicken?
- Boneless skinless chicken cutlets: or you can use chicken breasts pounded to 1/2 inch thickness
- Seasoned salt
- Black pepper
- Center cut bacon slices-I like to use center cut bacon or but you can use turkey bacon, if you prefer.
- Yellow mustard
- Honey
- Light Mayo- I like the flavor the light mayo, but you could also use non fat plain Greek yogurt, if you prefer.
- Dried onion powder
- Mushrooms-fresh and diced
- Shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese blend-I use Trader Joe’s lite three cheese blend
Ingredients:
- 4 (4 oz.) boneless skinless chicken cutlets or chicken breasts, pounded to 1/2 inch thickness
- 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 6 center cut bacon slices
- 1 1/2 Tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 1/2 Tbsp honey
- 1/2 Tbsp Light Kraft Mayo or non fat plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tsp dried onion powder
- 1 cup fresh mushrooms, diced
- 1/2 cup shredded reduced fat cheddar cheese blend ( I use Trader Joe’s lite three cheese blend)
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spray a 9×13 baking dish or oven-safe skillet with non stick cooking spray. Set aside.
- Season the chicken cutlets with seasoning salt and black pepper. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- While the chicken is in the refrigerator, cook bacon in the prepared oven-safe skillet or in a large skillet until crisp.
- Remove bacon and set aside. Do not discard grease.
- Saute chicken in the same skillet for 5-6 minutes per side, or until lightly browned.
- Place chicken in prepared baking dish or if you’re using a oven-safe skillet you can just set aside the chicken in the skillet.
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix the mustard, honey, mayonnaise and dried onion powder.
- Crumble the cooked bacon into pieces and smother honey mustard mixture over each piece of chicken, then layer with mushrooms, crumbled bacon, and 2 Tbsp shredded cheese.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until cheese is melted and chicken is throughly cooked.
- Remove from oven. Serve immediately. Drizzle with leftover honey mustard sauce, if desired.

Oh my goodness!! Another HUGE winner of a recipe! (We have thoroughly enjoyed every recipe we have tried, Linds, and we have tried A LOT!) Alice Springs Chicken is the ONLY thing I order at Outback….and now I can make it at home! The sauce is the key, and this honey mustard sauce is amazing! My finicky husband loved it and even had seconds, it was THAT good! I recommend using a cast iron skillet like pictured. I also just thinly sliced and layered my mushrooms on the chicken instead of chopping them, and they were cooked perfectly. Thank you for another delicious, healthy and easy recipe!
Thank you Angela for your wonderful review!! That was a joy to read how much you and your husband enjoyed this and so many of my recipes-thanks for continued support and for your comments! They mean everything to me!
Have a wonderful New Year and I look forward to hearing more reviews from you!
Thanks again,
Linds
My whole family loved this one. I am the only one who has ever had Alice Springs chicken, but they still loved it! Just a note, do not skip the pounding! I did, thinking my chicken was flat enough, and some thicker pieces weren’t quite done after 15 minutes.
Delish! Elevated by sprinkling with chopped cilantro, adding 1/4 sliced avocado to each piece and then a drizzle of balsamic reduction! Thank you for this yummy recipe
This sounds really good but I am not a mustard fan. Is it a very strong taste in the flavor? Could I leave it out entirely?
Hi,
The honey mustard sauce is what makes this dish, so delish! I highly recommend it-but if you prefer you can omit is completely if you wanted.
Thanks
I’ve never been to an Outback restaurant. I don’t think we have any here in Manitoba, Canada. But this chicken recipe was delicious. I will certainly make it again. It’s pretty quick and easy, which scores high with me.
OH! My! Goodness! This was so good and really easy to make!!! The whole family loved it! We will definitely be making this a lot!!
We just made this last night. I really wasn’t sure if my husband would like it but he LOVED it and asked that it go into our regular rotation!
