Makes 8 servings
If you grew up in the US, this recipe for classic sloppy joes might remind you of your childhood. I admit-I’ve never been a fan of the canned stuff….However; I absolutely love making these from scratch and my traditonal Skinny Sloppy Joe’s are always a huge hit. I also love switching out the traditional sloppy Joe mixture and making these; Big Mac Sloppy Joes.
Not only are these Lightened Up Philly Cheese Sloppy Joes insanely delicious, BUT they are made with just a few simple ingredients and made with lean ground beef-which makes these sloppy joe’s less fattening and less expensive than traditional Philly Cheesesteaks!
What ingredients do I need to make these Lightened Up Philly Cheese Sloppy Joes?
- 96% lean ground beef– you could use lean ground turkey, if desired.
- Yellow onion-diced
- Green bell pepper-diced
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper- to taste
- Roasted red pepper slices-I like to use the jarred roasted red peppers, diced.
- No sugar added ketchup
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Corn starch
- Low sodium beef broth
- Tostitos cheese dip
- Low point buns or tortilla wraps
- Thinly sliced provolone cheese
How do I make this Lightened Up Philly Cheese Sloppy Joe’s?
In a large skillet over medium heat add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces. Once the beef is browned, drain and discard any grease.
Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the onion and bell peppers.
Finish cooking until onion and peppers are tender.
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and no sugar added ketchup.
In a small bowl mix the cornstarch and beef broth.
Pour the beef and cornstarch mixture into the skillet with the beef and stir to combine.
Cook until the mixture is thickened.
Add Tostitos cheese dip, and stir until well combined.
Split and toast the rolls/buns, this will prevent them from getting soggy.
Remove from heat and add thinly sliced provolone slices to the top, let it melt.
Scoop 1/3 cup onto toasted buns or wraps and serve.
Store the sloppy joe mixture in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months. Remove from the freezer and thaw overnight in the fridge. When about ready to eat, warm the mixture on the stove and then add the cheese.
