What kind of apples should I use to make this Zero Point Cinnamon Apple Pie Filling?

For this recipe I like using Granny Smith Apples. Granny Smith apples stay nice and firm while cooking. These apples are firm and will keep their shape – even as they completely soften. However,  you could also use Honeycrisp or Braeburn apples which are both equally great for cooking.

How do I make this Zero Point Cinnamon Apple Pie Filling?

Peel, core and dice apples into bite size pieces.

Then place cored, peeled, diced apples in a large bowl and toss with lemon juice.

Add diced apples, water, sugar substitute, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg into a medium saucepan.

Stir to combine then bring to a boil over medium heat. Stirring often.

Once it starts to boil, let it boil for a full two minutes. (this step thickens the sauce)

Cover and simmer. Stir often, until apples soften, about 5 minutes.

Use immediately for your recipe,

or store in an air tight container in the refrigerate for 5-7 days, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Makes 6 ( 1/2 cup) servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups apples or 3 medium apples
  • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cups zero point granulated white or brown sugar substitute ( I use Lakanto Golden Monkfruit Sweetener)
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Peel, core and dice apples into bite size pieces.
  2. Then place cored, peeled, diced apples in a large bowl and toss with lemon juice.
  3. Add diced apples, water, sugar substitute, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg into a medium saucepan or 5-quart dutch oven.
  4. Stir to combine then bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir often.
  5. Once it starts to boil, let it boil for a full two minutes. (this will thicken the sauce)
  6. Cover and simmer. Stir often, until apples soften, about 5 minutes.
  7. Use immediately for your recipe, or store in an air tight container in the refrigerate for 5-7 days, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Notes:

  • In order to calculate the smartpoints on a recipe you have to enter the ingredients in manually (by ingredient) not by the nutritional information in the ww recipe builder-since this recipe contains zero point items the app doesn’t realize there is zero point items in the recipe and will calculate it based only off the nutritional info which is not accurate.
  • The Lakanto Monkfruit Sweetener has a 1:1 ratio to real sugar. If you use a different sugar substitute you will want to use the equivalent to real sugar that is recommended on back of the sugar substitute package.

Would using stevia still be zero points

      Hi Marlene,

Yes, most brands of stevia are zero points.

A white sugar sweetener that I know that has points is truvia-which would alter the point value.

      Thanks so much,

      Linds

Where would I look for the monk fruit sweetener? Health food store?

      Hi Marty,

I have seen a few Costco stores carry the Lakanto Monkfruit-you can find other brands of monkfruit in the baking/sugar isle of the grocery stores.

Or you can get it online here:

I found the Monk Fruit sweetner at my local Walmart store. It’s in the same aisle with the sugar!

This recipe is delicious! I used honey crisp apples which were pretty sweet. I could have cut the amount of Monk Fruit sweetener, probably in half. The finished product was good and would be fine with something like plain yogurt, but is pretty sweet eaten alone!

That was my plan but my yogurt is vanilla and sweetened with Stevia. I’m sure with the apple concoction it would be wayyyyy to sweet. I’ll have to pick up some plain Fage or Chobani and try it with that!

      Hi Janell,

Yes, Splenda would work. It is more concentrated than monkfruit sweetener (which has a ratio of 1:1) so you’ll want to use the conversion that is on back of the package for regular sugar.

      Thanks so much!

I have made this twice and it is an excellent way to use up freshly picked apples. The taste is great and I never used the lemon, did not have any on hand.

    Hi Lindsay,
Could I use this filling to make an apple pie? Also, could I use the two ingredient dough for the crust?
    Thank you.

      Hi Amanda,

Yes, xanthan gum makes a great substitute for cornstarch.

      That would work fabulous!

Do you happen to know how many carbs per serving and what would you say a serving is? 🙂 (and fiber so I could figure out the net carbs) I know apples have sugar too so….? (I’m trying! hahaha)

      Hi Becky

The serving size is 1/2 cup. It has 17 carbs per serving. 15 net carb per serving.

      Thank you so much

I tried doubling the recipe because I had a deep dish pie crust. The middle is wobbly. I’ve cooked it about as long as I can without burning the crust. Any ideas?

      Hi,

You can omit it if you don’t have it. I just balances out the acidity of the apples-but it won’t make a huge difference.

      Thank you

I’ve made this filling, and it is amazing. I broke it up into portions to freeze and they works well. I put it in overnight oats as an add-in and it’s also very good.
